Green Smoothie

Green Smoothie

This drink is sometimes referred to as “Pond Scum” by my husband.  Let it also be known that he drinks one every day!

This is probably the single best mixture of molecules that can be consumed.  A daily green smoothie is as close to a guarantee for better health as you can get.  Be as creative as your imagination and taste buds allow as you concoct a combination of fruits and veggies for this drink.

The ingredients you need are veggies, fruit, and water or juice.  I always go for organics.  (Refer to the “Dirty Dozen”, “Clean 15” posting)  Getting started, you will probably want more fruits than veggies.  This sweetens the taste of the raw greens.  As you progress, go for more green and you will have an even healthier drink.

Suggestions for veggies are celery, kale, escarole, lettuce, spinach, Swiss chard, cucumbers, carrots, parsley, or mint.  Fruits may be apples, bananas, strawberries, pears, pineapple, oranges, mangoes, or cranberries, and the list goes on for veggies and fruit…

If you feel like being brave, you can even throw in a beet, but I would reserve that for the experienced, hard-core smoothie tipper.

Apple cores, seeds, kale stems all go in; they have nutritional value!

Recipe

Choose your ingredients.  Chop them slightly before adding to your vitamix or other super blender.  Stuff them in the blender.

Add about 1.5 pints of water, more or less, depending on the density of your other ingredients and the thickness you desire in your smoothie.  Blend at high speed until well mixed and liquefied.  Pour into jars and store in the fridge if keeping for several days.  Also, chilling improves the taste.  Give your smoothie a good shake before drinking as the ingredients do separate.

Por su buena salud!
